Studio 1914 is a film and art practice led by Adzlynn & Hong Hu, working across Southeast Asia through inquiry, fieldwork, and engagement.
Our work engages with Southeast Asian identities and folktales, finding resonance within hidden histories and perspectives that continue to shape how we live and think today. With moving images as the primary medium, our films extend into site-specific installations, allowing intangible stories to inhabit physical spaces.
Our process led us to meaningful collaborations with artists in the region, amongst whom were indigenous artist-researcher Dr Kendy Mitot, filmmaker Joey Lee, musician and soundscape designer Gardika Gigih, and archivist Hardiwan Prayogo and Sora Gia. Several artworks emerged from these reinterpretations of folklore: MADU (2023), RATU (2024), CIRCLE BETWEEN REALMS (2025), which were exhibited at the National Museum of Singapore, ‘Di-Antara Ruang’ Exhibition in Yogyakarta, Indonesia and at the triennial ILHAM Art Show 2025 respectively.
Our latest films BAKAWALI: FORBIDDEN GARDEN & EVERYDAY GARDEN (2026) screened during Singapore Art Week at RAWGROUND 2026. It was an extension of our ongoing exploration of nature-led narratives in Nusantara folktales, which began during our RIMBUN DAHAN SOUTHEAST ASIAN ARTS RESIDENCY in February 2024. The films were presented as a two-channel installation with a quadraphonic soundscape, arranged and composed by Gardika Gigih.
Our practice also extends into the shared spaces, engaging with the community through festivals, exhibitions and workshops. The trilogy of exhibitions – LOVE & ACCEPTANCE, DYSPHORIA/EUPHORIA & DEAR HOME explored meaningful ways to resonate with the LGBTQ+ community through moving images and multi-sensorial spatial designs. We have also been involved in cultivating a robust film community in Taiping, Malaysia, through the RAINTOWN FILM FESTIVAL via short film competitions, film talks and film screenings based on the locality of the beautiful rain town.
We find ourselves constantly moved by the desire to reconcile our contemporary life with the ecological wisdom rooted within our region, through reflecting on our folktales and unsettled histories.
